These steps are only for a remote connection between two devices running macOS.  While it is possible to enable connections from other platforms, the connection would not be encrypted and is not recommended under any circumstances.

Enabling Screen Sharing on the target Mac

Content specific to it agents

It is possible to enable Remote Management of a managed Mac through Jamf (which also enables Screen Sharing at the same time). Once enabled existing administrative users on the device will be able to connect remotely.

To enable Remote Management (worded as Remote Desktop in Jamf):

  1. Log into Jamf via https://jamf.usask.ca
  2. Click Computers.
  3. Search for the computer object.
  4. Click Management.
  5. Click Enable Remote Desktop.

    Tip

The button will show Disable Remote Desktop if it is already enabled.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Sharing.
  3. Click Computer Settings and validate that both boxes are NOT checked.

    Note

These settings determine if access can be granted using traditional VNC that does not provide connection encryption.  These should always remain unchecked.

  4. Click the + icon and select your user account from the list.
  5. Click the checkbox beside Screen Sharing to enable it.

    Tip
titleHostname and Computer Name May Not Match

Make note of the address listed when you enable Screen Sharing (vnc://<hostname>.usask.ca) as this will be required to connect to the device. The hostname is what your device is registered as on the network, whereas the computer name could be something like Lisa's MacBook.

If you need assistance please contact us via our support portal at https://itsupport.usask.ca

Remotely connecting to another Mac

Expand

Tip

Connections from off campus (and in some cases on campus as well) will require you to connect to the VPN first.  Instructions for how to do that are here: How do I configure set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection on a Mac computer?

  1. From the Finder, click Go in the menu bar > Connect to Server.
  2. Enter in the address of the device to connect to in the form of vnc://<hostname>.usask.ca

    Tip
    titleHow to Find the Hostname

You will need to find the hostname on the target device that you want to connect to. Look for the address listed as vnc://<hostname>.usask.ca/ in System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing. This may be different from the computer name.

  3. Enter in your username and password when prompted, then click Sign In.
Tip

Your screen should now be visible.  By default the screen will scale to the window size of the screen sharing application which in some cases may appear squished or blurry.  Adjust the window size as necessary to find the appropriate size or setting.
