Connecting to a network share from off-campus

Excerpt
Info

In order to connect to your network share(s) from off campus you will need to either:

  1. Connect to the campus's VPN and then map the network share.
  2. Use How can I connect to my work computer using Remote Desktop Information and Instructions? to connect to your office computer and access network drives from there.
  3. Connect to the network share through the File Service Gateway (also known as Webshare or WebDav).

Which method should I use?

You should connect to your network share using the VPN when:

  • You are using a university asset (such as a laptop).
  • You are also accessing other U of S USask services.
  • You are wanting the fastest connection possible.

You should connect to your network share using Remote Desktop when:

  • Your designated work computer is on the university network and is configured to allow a remote desktop session.
  • The computer is already connected to the network shares you need.
  • You need to process large volumes of data on your office computer.
  • You are also accessing other U of S USask services.
  • You are wanting the fastest connection possible with less things to configure.

You should connect to your network share using Webshare when:

  • VPN cannot be used on your computer (e.g., prohibited by the local network admin)
  • You don't need to transfer large volumes of data.  The default limit in Windows for file uploads is 50MB.

Supported Protocols

  • SMB (Samba)
  • HTTP (WebDAV)
Warning
WebDAV is no longer supported on DATASTORE - please use Globus for file transfer and access.
