Basin overview

The Souris River basin is the sub basin of Nelson Churchill basin. The Souris River springs from the province of Saskatchewan in Canada, flows downs to North Dakota of the USA and winds back to the Province of Manitoba of Canada before it empties to Assiniboine River. The Souris River valley is generally flat and shallow and the drainage area is mostly semi-arid prairie and largely cultivated. There are large and small regulation structures in the basin including large dams of Boundary, Rafferty, Alameda,. Lake Darling and smaller reservoirs like Larsen, Roughbank, Deloraine.

Souris River outlet gauge is at Wawanesa at Lat 49°35'52" N  and Long 99°40'53" W, Gauge ID (05NG001). Total drainage area 61,100 square km (23591 square mi).

Available data

Digital Elevation Map data (DEM) and Land Cover data covering the whole basin is available in the USGS website,

DEM and land cover data for downloads is publicly available at https://hydrosheds.cr.usgs.gov/dataavail.php and

http://www.cec.org/tools-and-resources/map-files/land-cover-2010-landsat-30m respectively.

Streamflow data collected by  Water Survey of Canada and Surface water of USGS is publicly accessible at https://wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/ for Canadian portion of the basin and https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/sw for the USA portion. 

There are 60 active streamflow gauging stations, Eight stations record only stages while the rest record both flow and gauge heights. There are also 31 abandoned or inactive gauging stations.

Data manipulation

Script to split bigger files into smaller files and stitch back again. This script is used to cut out operational CaPA forcing file between 2010 and 2014 and replace it with Reanalyzed CaPA.

for example If Operational CaPA is basin_rain_op is the large file that can not be opened with  note pad or note pad++, then the option is to split it into smaller files say 700mb each.

Then it can be stitched back using cat command.  This is done on terminal command line. Files are numbered automatically  ( basin_rain1.001.r2c, basin_rain1.002.r2c, ...). Then you cut out the part of the file that is not needed and insert replacement and renumber them before stitching.

Attention: make sure that the file you cut out and the file you replace  starts with :frame and ends with :endframe as shown below
